What to say on the calls nobody teaches you. Fill in the brackets, keep it in front of you, and take notes while you talk.
- Asking your landlord for a repairSay what's broken, since when, and what you're asking for. Then put the same thing in writing.
- Booking with a new doctor's officeHave your insurance card in hand. Ask if they take your plan and are seeing new patients.
- Talking to a debt collectorGet the facts about the debt before you agree to anything or pay anything.
- Calling your bank about a charge you don't recognizeCall the number on your card, report the charge, and follow up in writing.
- Calling in sickCall or message as early as you can, follow your workplace's call-out rules, and keep it short. You don't owe anyone your medical details.
- Following up on a job applicationWait about five to seven days after you apply, then send a short, polite message. Skip it if the posting says no calls or emails.
- Asking a professor for an extensionCheck the syllabus first, ask several days before the due date, and propose exactly what you need. It's up to the professor, and they're allowed to say no.
