Booking with a new doctor's office
Have your insurance card in hand. Ask if they take your plan and are seeing new patients.
Have this ready
- Your insurance card
- A short list of why you want to be seen
- Your calendar
What to say
- Open
“Hi, I'd like to make an appointment as a new patient.”
- Check your plan
“Do you take [plan name from your card]? Is Dr. [name] taking new patients?”
- Say why
“It's for [a checkup / a specific problem].”
- Ask about cost
“Is a checkup covered as preventive care under my plan, or should I check with my insurer?”
- Close
“Is there anything I should bring or fill out before the visit?”
Write down the date, the name of the person you spoke with, and what they said.
After the call
- Your plan's provider directory, or the number on your card, can confirm the office is in network (HealthCare.gov).
- Most plans must cover certain preventive services at no cost in network (HealthCare.gov).
- Bring your card, a list of your medicines and your questions. MedlinePlus explains how to choose a primary care provider (MedlinePlus).
