I lost my wallet, or my identity was stolen
FirstCall your bank or card company now, or lock the card in its app.
Call your bank first. The faster you report a card, the less you can lose.
- Report each card lost to the bank or credit union that issued it, by phone or the app. You're not responsible for charges made after you report it (FTC).
- Follow up in writing: your account number, when you noticed the card was missing, and when you reported it. Keep a copy (FTC).
- Replace your ID. For a driver's license or state ID, contact your state motor vehicle agency. Replace a Social Security card through the SSA (USA.gov).
- Think your Social Security number is out there? Freeze your credit at all three bureaus. It's free (FTC).
- If someone uses your information, report it and get a recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov (FTC).
Debit cards. Debit cards have weaker protection. Report within 2 business days of noticing, and your loss is capped at $50. Wait longer and it can be $500 or more (FTC).
When things calm down: Freezing your credit
